The Science Behind Your Seasonal Body (part 2)

1.7 million patients. Brain chemistry data. DNA methylation. Here’s what modern science says about birth season and health — and why it sounds a lot like what ancient doctors were saying 2,000 years ago.


In Part 1, we explored the idea that your birth season shapes your body’s baseline — a concept from Traditional Chinese Medicine that’s over 2,000 years old.

If your reaction was “cool story, but where’s the proof?” — good. That’s exactly the right question.

Here’s the answer. It comes in three layers.


Layer 1: The Numbers Are Staggering

In 2015, a team at Columbia University did something nobody had done before. They pulled the electronic health records of 1.7 million patients from NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and cross-referenced every diagnosis with every birth date.

Not a survey. Not a questionnaire. Actual medical records.

What they found: 55 diseases showed a statistically significant link to birth month. Nine types of heart disease. Asthma. ADHD. Type 2 diabetes. People born in May had the lowest overall disease risk. October-born had the highest.

But correlation is just the starting gun. The real question is why.

A 2017 follow-up study across 10.5 million patients in three countries — the U.S., South Korea, and Taiwan — started answering that. The researchers didn’t just confirm the pattern; they identified the specific environmental exposures during pregnancy that could explain it:

  • Babies exposed to high carbon monoxide levels in the first trimester showed a strong positive correlation with depression and anxiety risk later in life
  • Babies exposed to high air pollution in the first trimester showed a positive correlation with atrial fibrillation risk
  • Babies with low sunlight exposure in the third trimester showed a strong negative correlation with type 2 diabetes risk — meaning less light, higher risk

And a 2021 study from China tracked 21,000 people for nearly 12 years. The finding? Winter-born and spring-born individuals had significantly higher death rates from all causes — and especially from cardiovascular disease. January births carried the highest risk. June births carried the lowest.

Let that sink in. The month you were born in is associated with how long you live. Across millions of people. Across multiple continents. Across different healthcare systems.

That’s not a coincidence. That’s a signal.


Layer 2: Your Brain Chemistry Has a “Birth Season Signature”

Okay, so birth month correlates with disease risk. But what’s actually happening inside the body?

This is where it gets fascinating.

In 2012, researchers at Utrecht University in the Netherlands did something unusual: they analyzed the cerebrospinal fluid of 223 healthy adults. Not blood. Not saliva. The fluid that bathes your brain.

They were looking at serotonin — the neurotransmitter that governs mood, sleep, appetite, and emotional resilience. Specifically, they measured 5-HIAA, a metabolite that tells you how much serotonin your brain has been processing.

The result: people born in spring had 37% higher serotonin metabolite levels than those born in autumn.

And here’s the kicker — it didn’t matter when during the year they took the sample. Winter, summer, didn’t matter. The birth season signal was still there. That means this isn’t a temporary seasonal mood shift. It’s a permanent biological imprint laid down around the time of birth.

For context: serotonin is the exact same neurotransmitter targeted by most antidepressants (SSRIs). The difference between a spring-born brain and an autumn-born brain, in terms of serotonin activity, is comparable to the difference between being on and off medication.

A 2002 Swedish study found the same pattern with dopamine — the neurotransmitter behind motivation, pleasure, and reward-seeking. Dopamine metabolism was highest in November–December births and lowest in May–June births. People with higher dopamine metabolism tend to be more impulsive, more novelty-seeking, more prone to addiction.

And in 2020, Vanderbilt University ran an experiment on mice that revealed the mechanism: pups raised under short-day (winter-like) light conditions had permanently lower dopamine and serotonin levels in their brains — and the genes that control serotonin production (Tph2, SERT) were dialed down even in adulthood.

In plain English: the amount of daylight your mother experienced during pregnancy can literally rewire your brain’s chemistry for life.


Layer 3: It’s Written Into Your DNA

The deepest layer of evidence comes from epigenetics — the study of how your environment modifies your genes without changing the genetic code itself.

Think of your DNA as a piano. The keys don’t change. But which keys get played — and how loudly — depends on the environment. Epigenetic marks are like sticky notes on the piano keys, telling some to play louder and others to stay quiet.

In 2016, researchers at the University of Southampton discovered that birth season leaves methylation marks — a type of epigenetic sticky note — on specific sites across the genome. They found 92 such sites in 367 young adults. These marks were clearly present at age 18 but largely absent at birth, suggesting they’re laid down in the first months of life, when the newborn’s body is calibrating to its new environment.

Two of these marks were confirmed to sit directly on the biological pathway linking birth season to allergy risk.

A 2022 study from the University of Manchester went further — they looked at actual human brain tissue and found that the core circadian clock gene NPAS2 was epigenetically modified based on birth season. People born in long-day seasons (spring/summer) had different methylation patterns than those born in short-day seasons. The same was true for genes linked to narcolepsy.

Translation: perinatal light exposure “sets” your internal clock for life, by chemically modifying the genes that control it.

And perhaps the most elegant finding: a 2023 meta-analysis pooling data from 21 cohorts and nearly 10,000 people worldwide showed that these epigenetic effects are latitude-dependent. At high latitudes (above 50°N) — where the difference between summer and winter daylight is dramatic — birth season effects on DNA methylation were strong and consistent. At low latitudes — where daylight stays relatively constant year-round — the effects disappeared.

This is the smoking gun. If birth season effects were random noise or cultural bias, they’d show up everywhere equally. Instead, they scale perfectly with the one variable that TCM identified 2,000 years ago as the key factor: the rhythm of natural light and seasons.


The Ancient Map and the Modern Territory

When you put the science next to the ancient framework, the overlap is hard to ignore:

Now, to be clear: TCM didn’t “predict” any of this. They didn’t have brain scanners or genome sequencers. What they had was something arguably more impressive — thousands of years of systematic, multi-generational observation of real human bodies in real seasonal environments.

They noticed patterns. They built a framework to describe those patterns. And that framework, it turns out, maps remarkably well onto what modern biology is only now beginning to measure at the molecular level.


So What Do You Do With This?

Here’s the thing: birth season isn’t destiny. It’s a starting point.

You can’t change your factory settings. But you can optimize the software.

If you’re winter-born and always cold and tired, the answer might not be “drink more coffee” — it might be warming foods, earlier bedtimes, and protecting your lower back and feet from cold.

If you’re spring-born and constantly irritable, the answer might not be “just relax” — it might be cooling foods, outdoor movement, and giving your liver energy an outlet.

If you’re autumn-born and always catching colds, the answer might not be “take more vitamins” — it might be moistening foods, breathwork, and supporting your lung system before flu season hits.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. But they’re starting points that 2,000 years of observation — and now millions of data points — say are worth trying.
